Abstract:
Is there a relationship between genetically determined intelligence and deviant behavior? In their recent provocative book, The Bell Curve, psychologist Richard Herrnstein and political scientist Charles Murray argue that there is. The book has fueled political and scientific discourse on intelligence and social structure which, as we think, poses a serious challenge for criminological criticism as weil. Against the background of the current "underclass" debate, a close reading of The Bell Curve and the sources cited by the authors, we suggest a substantive critique of their argument. We conclude that a biologically driven debate on crime is seriously flawed but might gain ground in the future. Therefore, further careful analysis of such arguments is required.
